Short-Term Reversal in Equity-Index Futures

Log in to collect

Teaser

Universe: EWG, EWQ, EWI, EWP, EWN, EWK. Parameters: rebalance=weekly.

Strategy in a nutshell

The strategy trades seven European equity-index futures. Each week it goes long recent losers and short recent winners, with weights proportional to how far each contract sits from the cross-sectional mean.

Economic rationale

Index futures overshoot on liquidity and hedging flows, then mean-revert over the next week. Weighting by the size of the deviation puts more risk on the contracts that moved the most, which is where the reversal premium has historically been largest. The lab runs the same rebalance rule on liquid ETFs (EWG, EWQ, EWI, EWP, EWN, EWK). That is the tradable stand-in for the paper's original single-name or derivatives universe, and the performance figures are from this ETF backtest.

Entry & exit

Entry

On each week, rank EWG, EWQ, EWI, EWP, EWN, EWK by 21-day return and invert the sort (reversal). Equal-weight the weakest 1 name(s), expecting a bounce.

Exit

At the next rebalance, sell names that are no longer in the bottom 1 and rotate into the new laggards.

Market data required

Needs at least 21 adjusted daily closes on EWG, EWQ, EWI, EWP, EWN, EWK before the first signal is ready. ETF columns print on exchange sessions only. The lab loads Yahoo Finance via backtest.data.load_daily_prices.

Symbols

EWG, EWQ, EWI, EWP, EWN, EWK

Frequency

Weekly · Daily adjusted close; signals rebalance on the month change (last available session)

History needed

≥ 21 trading days per symbol (about 1 months), plus a few extra bars so the first signal can fire.

Fields

  • Adjusted close (Yahoo auto_adjust)
  • Session date index

Credentials

  • None for paper and the onsite lab
  • Broker or exchange API keys only for live orders
