Lunar-Phase Effect in Precious Metals

Teaser

Universe: GLD, BIL. Parameters: rebalance=monthly.

Strategy in a nutshell

Using the lunar calendar, the strategy is long gold for the seven days before the new moon and in cash for the seven days before the full moon.

Economic rationale

A long literature links lunar phase to mood and risk appetite. In gold, that seasonal pattern has shown up as stronger returns into the new moon. The rule is a calendar overlay, not a valuation model, and the cash leg is what keeps the portfolio out of the weaker half of the cycle. The lab runs the same rebalance rule on liquid ETFs (GLD, BIL). That is the tradable stand-in for the paper's original single-name or derivatives universe, and the performance figures are from this ETF backtest.

Entry & exit

Entry

On each month, compute 252-day total return on GLD, BIL. Hold only names with positive absolute momentum, equal-weight.

Exit

Sell a name when its trailing 252-day return turns non-positive. If none remain positive, sit in cash.

Market data required

Needs at least 252 adjusted daily closes on GLD, BIL before the first signal is ready. ETF columns print on exchange sessions only. The lab loads Yahoo Finance via backtest.data.load_daily_prices.

Symbols

GLD, BIL

Frequency

Daily · Daily adjusted close; signals rebalance on the month change (last available session)

History needed

≥ 252 trading days per symbol (about 12 months), plus a few extra bars so the first signal can fire.

Fields

  • Adjusted close (Yahoo auto_adjust)
  • Session date index

Credentials

  • None for paper and the onsite lab
  • Broker or exchange API keys only for live orders
