Intraday Pairs Trading

Universe: EWU, SPY, BIL. Parameters: rebalance=daily.
Strategy in a nutshell
The strategy pairs FTSE 100 constituents on hourly prices. It keeps the five pairs with the smallest recent price gap, opens when the spread diverges, and closes when the prices meet again or the 22-hour cycle ends.
Economic rationale
Closely related large-caps share a common factor, so a temporary spread is more often microstructure than news. Restricting the portfolio to the tightest five pairs raises the chance of convergence inside the day. A hard end-of-cycle exit stops a failed pair from becoming an overnight position. The lab runs the same rebalance rule on liquid ETFs (EWU, SPY, BIL). That is the tradable stand-in for the paper's original single-name or derivatives universe, and the performance figures are from this ETF backtest.
Entry & exit
Entry
On each trading day, compute 252-day total return on EWU, SPY, BIL. Hold only names with positive absolute momentum, equal-weight.
Exit
Sell a name when its trailing 252-day return turns non-positive. If none remain positive, sit in cash.
Market data required
Needs at least 252 adjusted daily closes on EWU, SPY, BIL before the first signal is ready. ETF columns print on exchange sessions only. The lab loads Yahoo Finance via backtest.data.load_daily_prices.
Symbols
EWU, SPY, BIL
Frequency
Intraday · Daily adjusted close; the strategy loop checks each session
History needed
≥ 252 trading days per symbol (about 12 months), plus a few extra bars so the first signal can fire.
