Cross-Sectional Momentum in Futures
Log in to collectTeaser
Universe: SHY, IEF, TLT, LQD, HYG, TIP, BND. Parameters: rebalance=monthly.
Strategy in a nutshell
The universe is 18 futures: seven currencies, six equity indexes, and five fixed-income contracts. Every six months the strategy goes long the six strongest six-month momentum names and short the six weakest.
Economic rationale
Trend-following works across asset classes because capital and hedging constraints slow the adjustment of prices. A cross-sectional rank, rather than an absolute trend filter, keeps the portfolio market-neutral within the futures set. The six-month lookback matches the horizon at which futures momentum has been strongest. The lab runs the same rebalance rule on liquid ETFs (SHY, IEF, TLT, LQD, HYG, TIP, BND). That is the tradable stand-in for the paper's original single-name or derivatives universe, and the performance figures are from this ETF backtest.
Entry & exit
Entry
On each month, rank SHY, IEF, TLT, LQD, HYG, TIP, BND by 126-day return and equal-weight the strongest 2 name(s).
Exit
Sell any holding that falls out of the top 2 at the next rebalance and rotate into the new leaders.
Market data required
Needs at least 126 adjusted daily closes on SHY, IEF, TLT, LQD, HYG, TIP (+1 more) before the first signal is ready. ETF columns print on exchange sessions only. The lab loads Yahoo Finance via backtest.data.load_daily_prices.
Symbols
SHY, IEF, TLT, LQD, HYG, TIP, BND
Frequency
Semiannual · Daily adjusted close; signals rebalance on the month change (last available session)
History needed
≥ 126 trading days per symbol (about 6 months), plus a few extra bars so the first signal can fire.
Fields
- Adjusted close (Yahoo auto_adjust)
