Cold IPO Effect
Log in to collectTeaser
Universe: SPY, VNQ, XLK, XLE, XLV, XLF, XLI, XLB, XLY, XLP, XLU. Parameters: rebalance=monthly.
Strategy in a nutshell
The strategy buys NYSE, AMEX, and Nasdaq IPOs that priced below the original filing range, excluding issues under $5, units, REITs, ADRs, and closed-end funds. Positions are opened at the first month-end after the IPO, held for two months, equal-weighted, and hedged with a short sector ETF.
Economic rationale
A downsized IPO is evidence that demand disappointed, and the aftermarket has historically over-penalised that disappointment. A two-month hold captures the subsequent catch-up. The sector hedge removes the industry beta that would otherwise dominate a small IPO book. The lab runs the same rebalance rule on liquid ETFs (SPY, VNQ, XLK, XLE, XLV, XLF, XLI, XLB, XLY, XLP, XLU). That is the tradable stand-in for the paper's original single-name or derivatives universe, and the performance figures are from this ETF backtest.
Entry & exit
Entry
On each month, make_on_day sets target weights for SPY, VNQ, XLK, XLE, XLV, XLF, XLI, XLB, XLY, XLP (+1 more). Read engine.set_target_weights in the lab code for the exact signal.
Exit
A name is exited when its target weight is set to 0 (or the whole dict is empty = cash). Fills use 5 bps commission and 2 bps slippage.
Market data required
Needs at least 60 adjusted daily closes on SPY, VNQ, XLK, XLE, XLV, XLF (+5 more) before the first signal is ready. ETF columns print on exchange sessions only. The lab loads Yahoo Finance via backtest.data.load_daily_prices.
Symbols
SPY, VNQ, XLK, XLE, XLV, XLF, XLI, XLB, XLY, XLP, XLU
Frequency
Monthly · Daily adjusted close; signals rebalance on the month change (last available session)
History needed
≥ 60 trading days per symbol (about 3 months), plus a few extra bars so the first signal can fire.
